Who Are Home-Start Volunteers?

Home-Start volunteers are compassionate, dedicated individuals who freely give their time to support families in their community.

Many are parents themselves, bringing valuable personal experience, skills, and knowledge of local resources to help families navigate challenges. They are friendly, approachable, and trusted by parents to listen without judgment, offering reassurance, encouragement, and practical support tailored to each family's unique needs.

With a warm and understanding approach, our volunteers make a real difference—helping families feel less isolated, more confident, and better supported.

What to Expect as a Home-Start Volunteer

Joining Home-Start West Berkshire as a volunteer is a rewarding and exciting experience! Here’s what you can look forward to:

Comprehensive Training – Our 20-hour preparation course blends 8 interactive online modules with 4 engaging face-to-face sessions, giving you everything you need to feel confident in your role.

Ongoing Support – You’ll never be alone in your journey! A dedicated organiser will provide guidance and encouragement both during training and while you're supporting families

Extra Learning & Social Events – Enjoy additional training opportunities and fun social events throughout the year to connect with fellow volunteers and grow your skills.

No Out-of-Pocket Costs – We cover all travel and other volunteering expenses, so you can focus on making a difference.

Be part of something incredible—help families thrive while gaining new skills, friendships, and experiences!

The organisers are always at the end of the phone if you need them and you are encouraged if your not sure to talk to them. This is the most rewarding job I have ever done. I am being paid by the difference I make to people’s lives.
